South Tyrol: The other side of Italy

South Tyrol in the Italian Alps is one of the most innovative regions in Italy. Over the past five years, there have been more than 40 new hotel or spa openings throughout the region, with a growth in stylish and design led hotels. As well as world class food and wine, the region is Italy’s most northerly province and home to the breath taking UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Dolomites. The capital Bolzano/Bozen with its 120.000 inhabitants can be found approximately 120km south of Innsbruck and 160km north of Verona.

Discover a winter wonderland in South Tyrol

Home to eighty 3,000 m high peaks and one of the latest UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as the Dolomiti Superski and Ortler Skiarena, South Tyrol is every winter sport enthusiast’s dream. 300 days of annual sunshine, perfectly groomed ski runs and majestic high mountain scenery are all factors attracting skiers to the region. The region offers excellent downhill and cross country options for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, and for less experienced snow bunnies, South Tyrol has 63 ski schools. After a day on the slopes, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy après ski fun in cosy log huts or drop in at events organised on and off the slopes.

Dolomiti Superski

Most valleys boast easy access to the world's largest ski network, Dolomiti Superski, which features 12 skiing areas and 1,200 km of pistes, with many interlinked circuits, all available on one single pass. The circuits offer several panoramic viewpoints each, as well as traditional mountain refuges, where visitors can sample the culinary specialities of the region. The Dolomiti Superski’s flagship ski resort Kronplatz is amongst the most high-tech ski resorts in the world. Artificial snow machines within its ski area will never be more than five years old, and you will find 116 km of slopes, ranging from easy runs for beginners to hair-raising routes for experienced riders. The “ski mountain” can be reached from three villages and complimentary ski bus services operating between the resort’s 14 villages to the lifts. Plus, getting to the slopes is now even easier with trains running direct from ski resorts Kronplatz and the Three Peaks ski resort every thirty minutes.

Food from South Tyrol

Like all Italians, the South Tyroleans take their food very seriously. South Tyrol’s unique blend of Italian, South Tyrolean and Ladin cultures is reflected in the variety and fusion of flavours found in the region’s cuisine. Consequently, South Tyrol is home to some of Europe’s finest restaurants and award-winning wine producers. A shower of Michelin stars rains down on South Tyrol’s gastronomic scene, as its talented cooks continue to serve world-class cuisine. South Tyrol is Italy’s most decorated province featuring 26 Michelin stars for 19 restaurants. The region is also famous for its local specialities, including "Schlutzkrapfen" (ravioli filled with spinach and cheese), Sauerkraut, dumplings (of which there are 33 varieties!), roast venison with polenta, red cabbage goulash, Speck (special smoked meat), wine soup and pasta dishes. Desserts include pastries such as strudel stuffed with apples or pears, nuts and raisins. Rich with lush vegetation, South Tyrol produces apples, grapes and chestnuts and accounts for more than one tenth of Europe’s total apple production. The best place to try some local specialties is in one of the thirty restaurants and inns all around South Tyrol that belong to the Hotel  Restaurant keepers Association "Südtiroler Gasthaus" initiative or at one of the many traditional farm inns.
