Pope Francis will lead Easter celebrations with large numbers of faithful expected to attend the Holy Week ceremonies from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday Mass for the first time since 2019.
The Palm Sunday Mass on April 10 in St. Peter's Square will include a procession and blessing of palms. On Holy Thursday, Pope Francis will preside over a Chrism Mass at 730 GMT in St. Peter's Basilica. In the evening, Pope Francis is expected to celebrate the Mass of the Lord's Supper which includes the traditional foot washing ritual at a prison or detention center, refugee center or rehabilitation facility.
On Good Friday, the pontiff will preside over the liturgy for the Passion of the Lord in St. Peter’s Basilica at 1500 GMT, and later lead the Via Crucis from Rome’s Colosseum with the Stations of the Cross.
On Saturday, the Pontiff will celebrate the Easter Vigil in St. Peter's Basilica at 1830 GMT.
The Pope will lead Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square, followed at noon by his “Urbi et Orbi” blessing (to the city and the world) from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. On Easter Monday, Francis will deliver his Regina Caeli address at noon.
