Pope Francis travels to Japan, Thailand - 19-26 November 2019

VARIOUS

Pope Francis will visit Thailand on 20-23 November and Japan on 23-26 November in the first papal visit in the nations in almost four decades. In Japan, he will visit Tokyo as well as Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two cities hit by US atomic bombs at the end of World War Two. The Thailand trip coincides with the 350th anniversary of the founding of the “Mission de Siam” by Pope Clement IX to oversee missions in Siam, as Thailand used to be known previously.

UKRAINE talks in Paris

PARIS, FRANCE

The leaders of France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine will meet in Paris on Dec. 9 to discuss steps towards a peaceful resolution to the 5 year old conflict in eastern Ukraine. “The summit will be held following major progress since the summer in negotiations for a settlement in the east Ukraine conflict" according to a statement by the Elysée Palace.

EBU Rome bureau will offer a Vatican backdrop for the period 24 Dec to 6 Jan to cover Christmas and New Years events. Pope Francis will lead the celebrations with the Christmas Eve Mass on Dec 24 in St Peter’s Basilica, and Christmas Day Urbi et Orbi blessing in St. Peter’s square. New Year’s celebrations include Vespers and Te Deum on Dec 31 and Mass on Jan 1, marking 53rd World Day of Peace. Jan 6, will mark the end of the festive period. 70th Berlin International Film Festival
