The Coronation of Elizabeth II was the first event to be broadcast live internationally. People crowded in front of the few available television sets to see the magic happen.
The first Eurovision transmission included live coverage of the Montreux Narcissus Festival in Switzerland. The transmission of the event was relayed simultaneously in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
The first Eurovision Song Contest took place in Lugano, Switzerland. Seven countries participated in this historic event and a total of 10 national broadcasters transmitted the show live to audiences at home. Few people know that the contest was designed to show off the Eurovision Network.
The first transmission between North America and Europe using the Telstar satellite, a spherical satellite about the size of a large beach ball. There was only a 20 minute transmission window during each 2.5 hour transmission window due to the fact that the Telstar could only broadcast signals when it was visible to ground stations on both sides of the Atlantic.
The 30th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest took place in Gothenburg, Sweden and was the first time that the event was broadcast via satellite over the Eurovision Global Network. The Norwegian duo the Bobbysocks! were the winners with 'La det swinge'.
For the first time, the Eurovision Song Contest is broadcast live on the Internet. All fans in Asia can now be reached via permanent facilities from Eurovision Media Services and a commercial CD featuring all 25 songs comes out. The Olsen Brothers from Denmark are the winners with 'On the Wings of Love'.
In 2003, Eurovision FiNE (our global fibre network) is launched to complement our Eurovision Global Satellite Network. The original Eurovision fibre network connected London, Paris, Rome and Frankfurt. Today, this Eurovision FiNE now reaches more than 250 points of presence and is dedicated to meeting the needs of media organisations around the world.
Eurovision launches a game-changing app to bring sports fans must-see live action, replays and highlights from the world's top sporting events. Users can sort clips by channel, watch and share comments via social media and more!
Eurovision mounted its largest ever broadcast services operation to date at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.™ For the first time, 3 games, including the final, were broadcast in 4K resolution (ultra-high resolution) using the Eurovision Global Network. Content was carried via the fibre and satellite network from the various venues to the rightsholders and over 30 return feeds.
Eurovision announces the permanent extension of its Eurovision Global Network over the African continent. This development completes the global reach of the Eurovision satellite and fibre network which is already fully implemented over Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Eurovision launches a new IP-based service called 'Eurovision FLEX' to enable media organisations to go live from where the news is happening. This innovative solution is cost-effective and allows media organisations to manage their transmissions wherever they are in the world.
For the first time, Eurovision offered access to all live isolated production feeds for the 2016 European Athletics Championships through a multi-feed streaming platform accessible online (www.eurovisionsport.tv). Sports fans were able to experience the action on TV, radio and online.
Eurovision Media Services launches new remote graphics service to allow clients to adapt their graphical overlays for different locations by transmitting one signal feed across multiple geographical zones and inserting personalized graphics at the destination. Successful tests of the new solution were carried out during the 2018 FIS Ski World Cup in Crans-Montana, Swtizerland.
Eurovision Media Services launches an exciting new video platform to allow broadcast partners and rightsholders to download and share broadcast quality video content related to the inaugural 2018 European Championships. As the Host Broadcaster for this event, EMS will use this platform to centralise and distribute content during the event.
In collaboration with NovelSat, Eurovision Media Services develops a new encryption system called HMCrypt. Using Hypermux content distribution platforms, HMCrypt provides the utmost security when delivering content to rightsholders worldwide. It's digital rights management technology allows clients to authorise or reject reception sites in minutes.
The European Broadcasting Union announces its decision to transfer its business services to a new subsidiary, Eurovision Services SA, on 1 January 2019. The new subsidiary will be fully owned by the EBU and based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Eurovision Media Services launches an exciting new portfolio of services at Sportel Monaco. The new service portfolio from EMS will build on its experience and include new services – such as those related to personalisation and regionalisation – that will help clients adapt and enhance their content to further reach online audiences.
