SRF broadcasts the Pentecost service live for Eurovision from the parish church of St. Mauritius in Appenzell. Pastor Lukas Hidber and pastoral minister Patricia Staub will reflect in the service on the Holy Spirit—the power of God's love that came upon the disciples at Pentecost.
Throughout the ages, Christians have experienced and described the Holy Spirit as creative, life-giving, encouraging, strengthening, unifying, inspiring, and motivating. They have had the courage to speak publicly about God and His works. Pentecost is about energy and power.
The Pentecost celebration may be less tangible and concrete than Christmas. Yet it is striking that Pentecost and Holy Spirit hymns do not so much convey doctrinal teachings as they sing about the workings of the Holy Spirit. They use imagery that is rooted in the life experience of the people at the time they were written—imagery that was concrete and meaningful. What images and experiences would those be today? Pastoral minister Patricia Staub and Pastor Lukas Hidber explore these questions during the service and highlight the relevance of the Holy Spirit for our times.
Musical contributions come from the Appenzell yodel double quartet Piifestier. Minea Manser will play the hammered dulcimer, and Christian Fritsche will play the organ. There will also be congregational hymns for everyone to sing along.
