CERN Science Gateway Inauguration Ceremony

CERN will inaugurate on 7th October 2023 a new scientific education and outreach centre.

The building was designed by world-renowned architects, Renzo Piano Building Workshop and funded through external donations, with the leading contribution coming from Stellantis.

The inauguration ceremony will take place with special guests: Alain Berset, President of the Swiss Confederation and Fabiola Gianotti, Director general of CERN.

Overview

Eurovision News Events, on behalf of the CERN, will distribute this event LIVE via satellite over Europe,  MENA, Asia and Americas on Saturday 7 October at 09:00 GMT. The live transmission of the event will conclude with a highlights’ package and is free of charge.

Dear journalists,

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, is pleased to invite you to the inauguration of Science Gateway, a place for everybody to explore physics like nowhere else on Earth, designed by internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano. It will take place on Saturday 07 October, from 08.00 am (CEST) at CERN in Geneva.

On 07 October, CERN will unveil what makes Science Gateway unique in the world: immersive exhibitions, never-seen-before science shows and hands-on education laboratories where visitors from age 5 onward will be able to discover their inner scientist.

The inauguration is an opportunity to discover how Science Gateway will be a beacon to encourage young people to aim for careers in science and technology.

The programme will be as follow:

  • 8.00-9.00 Welcome and accreditation at the Science Gateway reception
  • From 08.30 to 08.50, photocall for photographers
  • 9.00-11.00 Press briefing and visit of the building with CERN DG Fabiola Gianotti, architect Renzo Piano and John Elkann, Chair of Stellantis
  • 11.00-12.00 Inauguration ceremony in the auditorium
  • With speeches from Fabiola Gianotti, Renzo Piano, John Elkann, President of CERN council Eliezer Rabinovici and the President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset
  • 12.00-13.30 Time for interviews and visit of the building and exhibitions.

A high-level roundtable discussion about The role of scientific research infrastructures as platforms for talent development in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)

will take place in the auditorium of Science Gateway in the afternoon. Media are invited to stay for this meeting.

A press room will be made available from 08.00 am to 5.00 pm (CEST) on the day of the inauguration on Science Gateway campus, with working spaces, ceremony retransmission and catering.

CERN Science Gateway project is made possible thanks to the generous support of its donors.

The main donation came from Stellantis Foundation. The Fondation Hans Wilsdorf also contributed to the project. The LEGO foundation and the Loterie Romande are partners and collaborate with educational material for the science shows and the labs. Other donors are Ernst Göhner Stiftung, Rolex, the Carla Fendi Foundation, the Fondation Gelbert, Solvay, the Fondation Meyrinoise du Casino and the town of Meyrin.
