EMS discusses 2018 European Championships at SVG Europe

Eurovision Media Services (EMS) – the business arm of the EBU – took part in today's SVG Europe's FutureSport event, alongside key representatives from the media industry, to discuss emerging technologies and upcoming events.

The one-day event took place at London's iconic Kia Oval cricket ground and featured sessions on Wimbledon 2018, SMPTE 2110, artificial intelligence in sports production, 5G, OTT, the future of sports on the move, the evolution of televised cricket, the 2018 European Championships, eSports production and more.

For the first time, in August 2018, a new multi-sport event, the European Championships, will take place in Berlin and Glasgow. The event will combine the existing individual championships of Europe's most popular sports into a single Championships that will take place every four years.

Franck Choquard, Head of Products & Marketing at EMS, joined the panel discussion moderated by Jim Irving, Founder of Fanview, to highlight this ground-breaking event.

"One of the biggest challenges for us [as Host Broadcaster] will be to link the venues [14 venues and two broadcast centres in Berlin and Glasgow] and make sure that all the signals from each location are available to stakeholders when and where they need them," said Choquard.

Major events like this always offer an opportunity for media organisations to engage their audiences in new and innovative ways. Choquard commented that, "from discussions with sports federations and rightsholders, it is clear to us that the content – particularly live content – will drive this event. I can't disclose the details at this time, but we are working closely with our partners to design and build tailored, multi-platform solutions that cater to this."

The EBU and EMS will act as both the broadcast partner (representing European public service media) and the Host Broadcaster (overseeing the overall production of the event). EMS will also distribute the event to media organisations for TV and online platforms.
