Start of Pontificate and Inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV

ROME, ITALY

The election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV marks a historic moment in the Catholic Church, as he becomes the first ever American Pope. Born in Chicago he is a dual citizen of the United States and Peru. Elected during a closely watched Conclave, his election reflects a desire for continuity with Pope Francis' inclusive vision, while also embracing the Church's rich traditions.
