The 72nd Festival de Cannes is about to kick-off Tuesday 14 May with the screening of the first movie in competition: "The Dead Don't Die" by Jim Jarmusch. Mexican Director Alejandro González Iñárritu will preside the jury and is the first Mexican to do so. Iñárritu won best director Oscar two years ago with "Birdman" and "The Revenant". Twenty one films are in competition for the prestigious Palme d’Or. The festival will run until 25th of May 2019.
The 72nd Festival de Cannes will run from Tuesday 14 to Saturday 25th of May 2019. Mexican Director Alejandro González Iñárritu will be president of the jury.
Iñárritu, who won the best director Oscar two years running for "Birdman" and "The Revenant", is the first Mexican to chair the panel. His association with the festival began almost 20 years ago, when his first film, "Amores Perros", premiered on the Croisette.

Movie Directors who have been honored in the past in Cannes are back on the Croisette: Pedro Almodovar, the Dardenne brothers, Ken Loach or Xavier Dolan. Quentin Tarantino is also higlhy expected with his new film: Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Al Pacino.
Cannes film festival finds itself in need of a boost. Last year, Festival Director Thierry Frémaux declared films from Netflix ineligible for the awards. The streaming giant won’t play by the festival’s rules on theatrical distribution in France, so it doesn't get invited to Cannes.
