FIFA Congress 2018

Moscow, Russia
13 June 2018

FIFA will hold it's 68th Congress in Moscow on June 13th,  a day ahead of the kick-off of 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

The now annual congress will, among other business, decide the host country of the 2026 World Cup. The decision is currently between the North American Joint bid of USA, Mexico and Canada, which would see the USA take the Lion's share of the matches and Morocco which has made four unsuccessful bids in the past. The distance between the bids has narrowed recently and U.S. President Trump's recent tweets urging African nations who benefit from US economic assistance to vote for the North American bid has drawn criticism from within Fifa.
Geo-politics also threatens to intrude on the congress after the Ukrainian football federation announced it would not attend, choosing to deputise the Ukrainian Charge d'affairs to Russia instead. FIFA will have to decide whether or not to sanction the Ukrainian federation for the Boycott, which is seen as a clear reaction to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014
