EU Western Balkans Summit

Sofia, Bulgaria
17-18 May, 2018

The Western Balkans summit begins 17 May 2018 as part of Bulgaria's EU presidency. Leaders will also discuss key issues at an informal dinner the evening before the summit.

The formal agenda of the EU-Western Balkans Summit revolves around connectivity, which is seen as an important factor in regional economic growth and Brussels is also expected to offer funds to help build infrastructure and transport links.

Leaders are also likely to address several pressing regional topics, which range from unresolved ethnic tensions, growing Russian, Turkish and Chinese influence in the region as well as progress towards the EU accession of some western Balkan countries, though a recent European Commission report pointed to deep rooted problems standing in the way of EU membership, saying that the six countries show “clear elements of state capture including links with organised crime and corruption at all levels of government and administration.” and that "There is also extensive political interference in and control of the media"
