German Elections

Berlin, Germany
24 September 2017

Germans go to the polls on 24 September 2017 to elect the members of the 19th Bundestag.

Chancellor Angela Merkel seeks a fourth term in office. She currently leads a grand coalition of the CDU/CSU and SPD but the Greens believe they could be the new power brokers for Germany’s next government.

In March 2017, the SPD chose Martin Shulz, the former President of the European Parliament, as their leader and chancellor candidate. Support for the SPD initially increased but the CDU has since regained its lead with polls generally showing a lead over the SPD.

In May 2017 the SPD lost control of the major state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the recent regional elections.
