From 20 February 2017
UN-sponsored peace talks between the Syrian government and opposition are to begin in Geneva for the first time in almost a year. The talks start today, 23 February, at the Palais des Nations.
The revival of the Syria talks was decided by the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, Staffan de Mistura last December in order to build on the momentum created by Security Council resolutions allowing for the deployment of neutral UN observers to oversee civilian evacuations from Aleppo after Syrian troops re-took the city. The renewed commitment to the fragile ceasefire by Russia, Iran and Turkey at recent talks in the Kazakh capital, Astana, are seen as potentially paving the way for further advances ahead of the U.N. Talks.
