70th Cannes Film Festival

The 70th Cannes International Film Festival is about to end tonight with the awards ceremony due to start a 1715gmt.

As president of the jury, Spanish director and screenwriter Pedro Almodóvar will announce the Palme d'Or.

This 70th festival reinforced its status of politically charged cinema with a selection of movies that encompasses the refugee crisis, climate change, mental health and the exploitation of animals.

The festival has attracted star names, including Dustin Hoffman, Marion Cotillard, Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. The Australian-born actress appeared in four films in total. She is in Sofia Coppola's "The Beguiled", a new adaptation of the southern gothic novel with Colin Farrell and Kirsten Dunst. Kidman and Farrell also appeared in competition with "The Lobster" director Yorgos Lanthimos’s new film "The Killing of a Sacred Deer". Cannes regular auteurs like Austrian director Michael Haneke and François Ozon were  back as welll as Russian formalist Andrey Zvyagintsev, with his new film "Loveless".

Italian actress Monica Bellucci will host the closing ceremony.
