The 2018 Fifa World CupTM opening match will take place between Group A teams Russia and Saudi Arabia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, one of 12 stadiums to host World Cup matches in 11 Cities across Russia.

The competition for the world's best national football team will be held under the shadow of economic sanctions imposed to Russia four years ago, by US and EU on charges of Russia's involvement in Ukraine's political crisis and conflict.  FIFA officials said that the necessary infrastructure for the games was completed and the Russian authorities expressed their belief that the preparations were done and that Russia would be a good host to hundreds of thousands of visiting football fans, inspite the concerns about the potential for terrorist attacks during the FIFA World Cup.
