London Celebrates It's "Brazilian" Side, As It Prepares to Hand Over The Olympic Games To Rio de Janeiro. With samba, capoeira and a Rio style street carnival taking place to welcome the Olympic Torch, London could have been mistaken for the Brazilian city during the past few weeks. And it has also been host to a delegation from the City of Rio De Janeiro, looking to learn as much as possible for when they host the games in 2016. Carlos Villanova, Communications Director, Rio 2016 Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Boris Johnson, Mayor of London 2. London 2012 Volunteers, Heroes Of The Games. At Heathrow, in the Olympic Park in Stratford or in the shadow of Big Ben, in their pink and magenta shirts, they were always on hand to help. The London Olympic Games would not have been possible without the Volunteers. There have been samba and capoeira lessons during festivals in London?s parks. And the locals and visitors have loved it. SOT Carlos Villanova, Communications Director, Rio 2016: I love London, and London during the Games is an experience of itself. I have fantastic experiences here. The opening ceremony was the very first of them, and it was astonishingly beautiful. I loved it. I really loved it. During the London Games, Casa Brazil at historic Somerset House has been a window into Brazil. SOT Carlos Villanova, Communications Director, Rio 2016: The idea is to bring a glimpse of Brazil, of our culture, to the host city. So what you see here is what Rio is about and of course what Rio 2016, our edition of the Games, is to be. A delegation from Rio de Janeiro has been in London to check out the media facilities. Next time it?s in their hands. And Brazil had a large media contingency to report on London 2012 for audiences back home. London and Rio have been exchanging information for years already. Rio?s Mayor admits London?s Olympics will be a model for his city. SOT: Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro: Rio has the challenged of building still great infrastructure. But besides that when we have this infrastructure ready we will need to operate it so we will follow London a lot on that. It?s amazing the logistics and the operation of the city. ---------- London 2012 Volunteers, Heroes Of The Games! shotlist: - edited package clean - edited package dirty - Edited Rushes: Heathrow Volunteer GVs Various GVs London volunteers Boris Johnson opens Ambassador Pods GVs Gerry and Joan Sheridan SOT Gerry Sheridan Script: 10:00:00 OPENING GFX Many have said that the real face of the London Olympics has been ? and still is ? the army of volunteers. Nearly 50,000 of them have been on hand to help visitors with any questions. One of them is Sayla. She has been working at Covent Garden in central London. She hopes to become a lawyer and enjoyed the experience. SOT Sayla Mackubick, London Ambassador: It is a very useful thing to put on my CV. It has been beneficial in many ways. It has developed many skills for me as well. The Olympic fever was so strong that many volunteers camped at several sites across London, like here on this rugby pitch. Just before the Olympics kicked off we met volunteers Gerry and Joan Sheridan. They even remember when London was host to the Games last time round, back in 1948. SOT Gerry Sheridan, London Ambassador: I felt proud to be in London because only 3 years after the war had ended we managed to get our act together. Loads of bombed hosues, there was food rationing. There was a general air of depression around London, but the fact we got the Games on and running, it made a lot of people very proud to be Londoners. On the last day of the Games we find the couple still at work in Victoria Park. It?s has been an experience they wont forget. SOT Joan Sheridan, London Ambassador: Just meeting the people and everybody has been so friendly. There is a terrific atmosphere, as if everybody is on holiday and they are all as on. It?s been great. And both will be back for the Paralympics in 2 weeks time.
