Safe, reliable and instantly recognisable. Lining up here at the London Eye. But with up to three million extra journeys anticipated at the height of The Olympic Games ? it's likely to be visitors forming the queues. So are London's famous black cabbies ready? THE OLYMPICS PRESENT A MASSIVE OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE, VISTORS FROM ACROSS THE WORLD TO EXPERIENCE FIRST HAND WHY LONDONS TAXIS ARE OFTEN VOTED THE WORLDS BEST. THERE'S GOING TO BE DEDICATED TAXI RANKS AT EVERY SINGLE OLYMPIC VENUE. And this is the latest batch of new recruits, who were part of the largest ever passing out parade, joining the exclusive ranks of London's black cab drivers for the Games. London's black cabs are part of Transport For London's extensive transport network and every one of the 25,000 drivers in London has had to pass a test called 'The Knowledge' which means that both new recruits and experienced cabbies have an encyclopedic knowledge of London's streets. TAXI DRIVERS SPEND TWO YEARS THREE YEARS MAYBE EVEN LONGER LEARNING THE WORLD FAMOUS KNOWLEDGE PROCESS. IT'S A PROCESS THAT IS REALLY TOUGH ITS REALLY HARD AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES THEM WORLD FAMOUS LONDON CABBIES. I go to Waterloo station please Yeah Waterloo station certainly, I'm going to have to go round the houses a little bit because of the road closures because of the Olympics ok? OK. In order to do what we call the knowledge you've got to learn 320 routes. You've got to learn where all the roads go to, all the side roads, all the no left turning, one way streets and then you've got to know where the places are as well, all the hospitals, restaurants, theatres, pubs so it's a combination of the streets and the places makes it really difficult. I'm going to turn left at these traffic lights and I'm going to take us over Lambeth Bridge because that will avoid some of the traffic around Parliament Square and the Olympics. Over 300 million miles are travelled in black cabs every year and with the eyes of the world on London this summer, as always it will be the London cabbie who will be on-hand to help the public. 2. The First Cultural Audit of World Cities. Script: 10:00:00 OPENING GFX Olympic London was the host of the first world cities cultural summit. The results of the first cultural audit of 12 leading world cities were revealed. SOT: Paul Owens, Director, BOP Consulting: There are great differences and varieties between the cities. I mean for example London because of its kind of history and heritage is very strong on museum. London has over a thousand museums. And that's part of its ability to attract 15 million visitors every year. New York's very very famous for Broadway. New York has over 400 theaters putting on over 43000 performances every year. That's an astonishing figure. If you look at Istanbul. It's an incredible dynamic, young city. But also a city known for its heritage, has over 30000 heritage sites. SOT Yusaku Imamura, Tokyo Metropolitan Government: The role of cultural policy by the public sector is challenging. We believe that the key strategies are nurturing emerging talents, collaboration and partnership between various ectors, and the building of a platform as a hub of international networking and collaboration. The audit shows culture is as important as trade and finance. SOT Munira Mirza, Deputy Mayor for Education and Culture, London: The lessons that we've learned from this report is that London must continue to invest in culture and must continue to believe in it and experiment to take risks, to value the institutions that have been created, to have more partnerships, more international links, and to see culture as a crucial part of the future. SOT Dr. Ahmet Emre Bilgili, Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Culture & Tourism: The power of culture to bring people together and the ability of realization cultural activities in the cities. As London is hosting the Olympics, many visitors enjoy some of those cultural experiences too. Vox pop: We've been in town for a couple of days. We've seen a few Olympic events. We got tickets for the volleyball at earl's Court later this afternoon, and thought lets come into London and see some of the museum. We are down in this part of town. We've just been in one down here and we are heading into the science museum. Then we probably will catch a bite to eat before we got back for our next event. Vox pop: As we entered the museum, wow, it's amazing. The dinosaur's bone, and the inside of the animal exhibition is quiet good.
