That?s the British government?s message as the final preparations for the Games continue across London. Of the just over 9 billion Pound Sterling budget, the vast majority went to infrastructure and security. 2 thirds of the money was for the Olympic Park with its new stadiums, housing units and upgraded transport network. But since London got the bid to host these Games the world economy went into a slump, creating extra financial pressures. SOT David Goldstone, Director of Finance, Government Olympic Executive: The economic crisis of 2008 and running into 2009 did present some really major challenges for us. The village and the media centre were both intended to be privately financed and were very major investments in themselves. And because of the global economic situation those had to be public funded rather than privately funded. But the majority of the cash spent is a long-term investment. SOT David Goldstone, Director of Finance, Government Olympic Executive: We are able to say when we set the original budget that about 75% of all the funding on the development of the Olympic park site and the area around in East London would leave a long-term legacy and therefore really contribute to the regeneration. And happily that position has sustained right through the program. The British Minister for the Olympics is happy with the healthy financial situation of the games, and praised sponsors for coming on board to bring in extra cash. SOT: Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and the Olympics: One of the success of London was our ability to raise over 700 million (Pounds) from domestic sponsors. So this has gone towards the cost of the games. That?s money that the government doesn?t have to find. The government even has just under half a billion Pounds ready for any contingency. So from a budget angle, let the Games begin. Keyframe: Id Item: 618800 Tx_Time: 18:00 - 18:15 Tx_Date: 18-JUL-2012 Status: TRS Origin: ZZEBU Origin City: GNVE Item type: WF |
