Dopesheet: Canoe Slalom World Cup 5 FINAL - Bratislava, Slovakia (31⁄08⁄2012 - 02⁄09⁄2012)

The sun eventually decided to show up for the last day of competition in the
2012 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup final in Bratislava. Jana DUKATOVA (SVK) offered the Gold to its home crowd in K1 Women while the Germans ANTON⁄BENZIEN nicely grabbed their first World Cup victory.

Franz ANTON ⁄ Jan BENZIEN (GER)
We left the C2 men category on Friday chocked by the surprising withdrawal of the absolute favorite and local stars, Pavel and Peter HOCHSCHORNER (SVK). The five time World Champions and three time Olympic Champions were thus not here to please the crowd of the Water Sports Centre Cunovo (Bratislava, Slovakia) and solace their Olympic disappointment with a win here but the spectators nevertheless enjoyed a high level final. The Polish pair SZCZEPANSKI⁄POCHWALA took the lead in this Final but the Germans ANTON⁄BENZIEN, despite a 2 second penalty, excelled at almost every difficulty of this course and eventually won the race with authority, finishing only 0.81 second before the Polish.

Pierre LABARELLE ⁄ Nicolas PESCHIER (FRA) Pierre LABARELLE and Nicolas PESCHIER finished third in Bratislava. They offered to France its second victory in the 2012 Overall World Cup after Etienne DAILLE yesterday in the K1 Men category. "Today was very tough. The course is very technical, very demanding, especially in the last part.
That?s where we lost the Gold medal today in fact. But our goal was to qualify to the Final to get enough points to win the overall World Cup and we did, so we can be happy: we got three gold medals and a podium this year.
The disappointment of not participating to the Olympic Games is still vivid, but for us this result is promising for the next four years."

In K1 Women, the local hero Jan DUKATOVA tore the course apart and left no chance to her opponents, one week after her victory in Prague?s World Cup.
These two gold medals certainly leave her with some mixed feeling about her season and wondering what could have happened if she had shown the same face in London Olympics. "I had a very tough start of the season, she said. I felt sick; I never had a chance to do some proper training and to gain the necessary confidence that helps you take bold moves when you need it in a race. It was important for me to do well in the last two World Cup because I felt sorry not to have won a medal in London a month ago."

By finishing third in Bratislava, Ursa KRAGELZ (SLO) thus becomes the 2012 Overall World Cup winner: "It did not go as smoothly as I planned today but I still got the bronze medal and I am the winner of the 2012 World Cup so it is very satisfying. It was important for me because I did not qualify for the Olympic Games in London after very bad European Championships."

00:00:57 00:02:03 Venue Presentation - ITV 00:01:06
The two time Olympic Champion Michael Martikan was not in a capacity to compete here , has done a controversial course, it was even worse with the wind in the semifinal. This course has been built as a bypass of a very important dam for the Danube regulation. This is one of the more difficult venues we have during this tour. A long course , a powerful course with a lot of drop, its like a trampoline, its like ski jumping , a 2-3 metres drop and the strength of the water is quiet big , because the water is in a very narrow stretch between 2 blocks, we have several drama . People leading the gate until gate 18 or 19 and suddenly just missing there, you fail or you succeed , drama is someething we are looking for ...

"Enough of the waiting and straight into the action, we are going to be covering 5 discipliines starting off with the single men?s canoe, we are going to be covering the top runs of each group.
On this very testing course is Anze Berzcic from Slovenia , he is a talent to watch out for the future , he recently won the bronze medal at the under 23 worlds , and so far this season his best result was a 7th place in Spain at La Seu d?Urgell.
If you are not familiar with the sport the idea is to negotiate yourself down a water channel, to make it interesting the designers have strategically placed a series of gates, today we have 19 gates, the green and white gates are to be taken downstream and the red and white gates are to be taken against the stream and as we can see on your picture , unstream.
To make it more interesting you have to go through the gates without touching them , touch a gate , there is 2 seconds instantly added onto your time, if unfortunatly if you are judged by the adjudicators to have missed a gate completely, then it?s a 50 second penalty which effectivly rules you out of the competition.
Anze here putting in a terrific performance , as you see he has to really get into the eddy and then use the power of the water to cut accorss the stream and go through gate number 19 which is upstream, he is allowed to push off against the side, sprint over the line and this is a wonderful time.
The rule going around the gate is you need to get the whole of your head and part of your boat around the pole without touching it.
"

"If you have been following the sport in the other 4 World Cup events this season then Alexander Slafofsky from Slovakia wont need any introduction , he is so far leading the World Cup standings , he is tall ,athletic excelling at winter sports and this is his home course so we are expecting some real lightning stuff here , its all about chosing the right lines, using the water, and as you can see in these canoes they are kneeling down on 2 knees and clearly using 1 blade on the paddle.
Niagra falls , a veritcal drop of 3 metres, again he will know this course inside out , pushes off the wall, what he needs to here is get as near to gate number 18 as possible, again using the wall, crosses over for the last upstream gate and this is looking very solid, also he is a right handed paddler which has proven to be difficult today. That?s enough , not only does Alexander Slafkovsky win today , but he also takes home the first prize for being the best C1 paddler of the whole season.

Confirmation of the result, 1st place and the Gold medal goes to the Slovak Alexander Slafkovsky , silver to Slovenia and the Bronze medal to the Czech Republic.

That?s a great result for the local crowd, with testing conditions on the first of 2 days activities.

It is great to compete for smal country, there as not such competition as France to get into the team? I take advantage of my double nationality to compete for Togo. I'm a real begginner, I began this sport for last five years. And competing in world cup with the best world ranking athletes is just fantastic... I can't stop smiling...

"The action continues , we are now going to switch disciplines to the men?s Kayak final, Kayak is where you are sitting down with your feet in front of you and as you will see, 2 blades on your paddle
2012 has been a breakout year for Frances Etienne Daille, he was 2nd in Cardiff then first in Pau La Seu d?Urgell and Prague, very light only weighs 68 kgs , he keeps the boat floating on top of the water, he actually wasn?t going to come here this week but said, I am doing well in training , so why not. Its been a long season , Etienne was the favourite going into the Olympics, he perhaps suffered from stage freight and came 7th so this was a learning year.
So far on this run he seems to be almost fighting against the water ,its maybe not his day.
Coming up to the tricky section, he needs to chose the right line going over Niagra, going down through the two downstream gates, he needs to cut back as quickly as he can , on the bottom half of the course Etienne is really on form , it?s a shame that at the top it wasn?t really going well, off the side he cuts back , and makes up 2 or 3 seconds on the rest , ending up with a really good time, eventually he would finish 3rd, but hot happy with himself.
Etienne Daille would go on to be crowned the champion for the World Cup mens kayaking for the 2012 season,
"
00:08:17 00:08:36 ITV Etienne DAILLE (FRA) K1 MEN World Cup Winner 00:00:19
This race surely was not the best of the year. I think I did the best last week in Prague. The course was hard but I still managed to get on the podium. This is stilla greast satisfaction to have been able to be on 5 podiums over the 5 Wold cup stages of the year
00:08:36 00:10:20 K1 MEN 1st Place 00:01:44
"Although Etienne Daille is the champion for the year, todays top performer is 28 years old from Slovenia , Jure Meglic , not the biggest man in the field but he has a very good technique , his plan is to really diminish the time he takes on the upstream gates as that?s where the most time is lost. He now has succesfully negotiated the easier middle section , now he is setting himself up for the toughest 4 gates on the course and many people its some of the toughest 4 gate combination they have ever seen , certanly this season.
He decides to take the peel out option , goes through the gate then back round the top, the current will take him through gate 16 , picking up a 2 second penalty , he is not going to be happy with that , now its across the stream for the last upstream gate of the day, its very shallow water here, many of the competitors have been banging their blades on the bottom. Even with a 2 second penalty he was fast enough to come home first and win the race.
Confirmation of the result, the gold for Jure Meglic from Slovenia , France take bronze and silver."

The last time I won a World Cup was 2007, so it was a long time .. So this year, I had to do an operation in October, so It is really incredible to be in the top of the World Cup again?
00:10:37 00:12:43 C1 WOMEN 3rd Place 00:02:06
C1 WOMEN "The last event on the first day of racing was for the women and this was absolutly at the limit of testing their skills, the canoe singles
The event started with 17 paddlers, with the best 10 making it to the final
In action Rosalyn Lawrence from Australia, she won in Cardiff and was very close in the next to World Cup events and she is the women to look out for, she won the world U23s last season , has no fear , loves wild water, she is the youngest of 3 paddling sisters , 2 have now retired and so its now all down to Rosalyn .
A little bit low dropping below the gate but manages to put herself back in the right position , the conditions are really tough today , normally the women are expected to paddle for around 95 or 100 seconds , it certanly not going to be the case today , she has already been going for 115 seconds. The good news for Rosalyn is that she is penalty free, the lactic acid will now be building up in the arms as she sets herself up with a great angle , the hardest part today , upstream gate number 18, the water is very shallow here , paddling through the eddy to get a good position , across the stream, she will probably feel that she has left a few seconds on the course but it?s a clear round , which will be enough to guarantee Rosalyn Lawrence the overall championships for in the womens C1 for this season.

It was a lot of fun firstly , its great to paddle here in Bratislava I really like it, it was pretty tough racing against katia the local girl from Slovakia , I am very happy for her to win , she is a good paddler , she had a good run. The C1 women are improving every time I race against them.its getting tougher and tougher.

"The onform woman for today is the 26 year old from Bratislava , Katarina Macova , she has form on this course, she won the bronze medal at the world championships here last year and also in Bratislava was the European Champion in 2010. This is all about conserving her energy for the difficult bottom section of the course , these courses are won and lost on the last 4 gates.
Excellent around gate 13, clearly has been down this course 100 times before and knows how the water flows, as she negotiates the last section
And that?s tight, she is cutting back into the main water stream , using the water flow , getting round difficult 17 , just with 3 strokes of her paddle, is in the right position takes the last gate comes around, even with a 2 second penalty she wins by 3 seconds so that?s a full 5 seconds faster than the rest today.
Confirmation of the results , Katarina Macova from Slovakia takes the Gold, Australia silver and Oriane Rebours from France bronze

"It?s the same venue but its another day , bright sunshine, the wind has dropped and we are setting ourself up for the Canoe doubles, the best 10 teams are going in reverse order of the fastest times recorded in the semi finals , and lets have a look at the best ones, fairly unique , Pierre Labarelle and Nicolas Peschier they have actually won the last 3 World Cup events of this season
The team are an interesting combination, Pierre Labarelle weighs less than 60 kgs and is small in the front and then there is the muscle man Nicolas Peschier in the stern, it works extremely, both of these 2 bye the way are very competant C1 paddlers , they havnt been competing in that discipline this Olympic season as France is just so strong.

Remember in these boats these 2 are going down exactly the same course as all the other competors in the different finals today, the gates are exactly the same width apart for everyone, A 3 metre drop there into Niagara , peeling off , pushing off the wall and back into the main current , In the C2 s they were desparatly disappointed not to claim the Olympic place. Klauss and Péché took that, but havent they made up for it since then, they proved to be a little bit sloppy on the bottom, valuable seconds are being lost and in this game you cant do that . But it?s a clear round and another podium for the French team.
"
00:17:35 00:17:55 ITV N. PESCHIER & P. LABARELLE (FRA) - C2 World Cup Winner 00:00:20
During an Olympic season its difficult not to be thinkin about the games , unfortunatly we missed it on the French selections, until then the World Cup had been secondary for us , but finally we did manage to perform really well, we managed to win 3 races plus a podium in the finals and we could have not wished to be better than that , the seaons has finished in a really nice way
00:17:55 00:19:46 C2 MEN - 1st Place 00:01:51
"And with this performanc Labarelle and Peschier became the World Cup C3 champions in 2012.
However the winners of todays race , it?s a new team Franz Anton and Jan Benzien from Germany , they are established C1 paddlers but they hav just recentl come together and the perfoemances they have been putting together this season , they could well shake up the discipline for many years to come,
They are positioning themselves well, and they are well up on the split, its their race to lose now, what they have to do is set themselves is set themselves up nicely, this is a big drop in a C2, a 3 metre drop, as you can see the paddler in the stern of the boat cant see whats going on , that?s great team work as they peel off and spin around 16 , putting the boat in position , full power on , around the upstream and accorss the water, the challenge here is that the water is very shallow , they push off against the bank, and this is a wonderful performance in their first season , they cross the line and take the gold.
Confirmation of the result , an excellent gold for Anton and Benzien from Germany, Poland in 2nd and France in 3rd

00:20:12 00:21:33 CLIP Canoe Slalom Development Program 00:01:21
"An important legacy for the next generation of paddlers is being created by the Canoe Slalom Development program , Pierrrik Gosselin is in the field putting the program to work : "" The Slalom development program is based on 3 main items, the first is, to have all peapole practicing canoe the second one is mainly competition , and the last one is an educational program, we have some actions in differernt countries especially during the Continental Championships and then from that we can select suitable athletes and the best of them are selected for the Word Action during the World Championships or World Cup ""
Victoria US results achieved in a real 1-1 partnerships with a sharing of experiences and ideas , discussing lines as well as the best ways to tackle the couse , producing some major improvements,
?It is really important for me and for my team because it is a really good way to improve my knowledge and my results comes better.
For the next Year I?ll expect to be in the semifinales for World Cup and I want to be in the finales for the Junior, and even maybe finish in the top 3.""
The plans are going well , in this weeks Bratislava World Cup she reached the semifinals

"Moving on , the last event of today, it?s the Kayak indiviidual for the women and we have the top 10 kayakers going.
On the course is Ursa Kragelj from Slovenia, she is on form , winning in Spain in the 1992 Olympic course in La Seu d?Urgell , slightly built but technically very solid , and exciting prospect for the future of the sport.
Its all about chosing the right lines and using the power of the water, easier said than done
She wraps herself tightly around the upstream gates , and it really close at this stage of the course , over Niagara, how is it going to go, maybe losing a couple of seconds , she sets herself nicely .
She is fighting herself around the upstream and leaving another couple of seconds on the course unfortunatly , just one more upstream gate to go , and that is very tight , the best we have seen so far today.
That would be good enough for the 3rd position ,The compensation is that she is crowned the Womans ICF World Cup champion for Kayak slalom for 2012.

"Welcome to the world of perfection Jana Dukatova from Slovakia and has been on this course since she was a junior , brought up in Bratislava and widely renowned for making the course look redicusly easy , she knows exactly where the next paddle is going to go . She won last week in Prague , having had some injuries earlier in the season which slowed her down a little bit, but once she finds here form with her style its very difficult to beat her. A rather tall athlete, she takes fewer strokes than the others but knows exaclty what she is doing setting herself up nicely for 18, how can she get to the upstream gate, the answer is very tight .
One more gate to go, she pushes off the wall and this is an exhibition, she obliterates the competition and for the second week in a row, Jana Dukatova wins for Slovakia in front of her home crowd ...

It was a great season for this sport. Honestly we had the Olympic Games in the middle as a Highlight, but this year for Slalom we had 5 World Cups, we started in June in Cardiff, with not such as good weather we had here in Bratislava to finish the season... but I think every race has been high quality race, and the World Cup has provided some thing for everyone ... For the athletes : preparing the Games, and for those who missed it, the opportunity to developp their potential and carrieres ... next year will be an exciting season, with five World Cups and World Championchips... We will be back in action in June...
