Dopesheet: Canoe Slalom World Cup 4 - Prague, Czech Rep (24⁄08⁄2012 - 26⁄08⁄2012)

Jana Dukatova (SVK) won the Women's K1 gold medal on the final day of the Prague World Cup. In a final that included only three paddlers ranked in the world's top 10, Dukatova delivered her run with the graceful precision that has become her trademark. Three weeks after they were tipped to medal at the Olympic Games, Etienne Daille (FRA) and Benjamin Savsek (SLO) won gold at the Prague World Cup. Caroline Loir (FRA) took the gold medal in the Women's C1 final winning her 3rd World Cup of the season. The Cardiff World Cup is the only one that she has not medalled and this is because she didn't compete in it. In the C2 final, France's Labarelle and peschier prevailed.

The Prague World Cup which was held from 24-26 August (Friday-Sunday) is the fourth of five International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Slalom World Cup Series held across Europe this season.
300 paddlers from 30 countries went through an artificial course positioned on the lower end of river Vltava where the Prague Canoeing Center is located.

Hello and welcome to the beautuful city of Prague the capital of the Czech Republic for the 4th ICF World Cup
slalom event 2012
The legendary Troja course on the banks of the Vltava river welcome 200 of the world's top paddlers from 30
nations who are going to battle it out in 5 different catagories in canoes and kayaks.
So sit back and enjoy the action with me Matthew Leighton and let the action begin.
00:00:57 00:02:03 CLIP Venue Presentation - ITV Pierrick GOSSELIN ( Slalom Development Coach) 00:01:06
This place has welcome some international competition as a World Cup for at least the last eleven past years.
Next year the World Chasmpionships will be helded here. It is a real channel like the staight one. There is not
so many drops or speed drops as we can found in Pau (FRA) or London (GBR) but we obviously will count on the
strategy that the athletes will choose and perform. The venue is not that big, the athletes might choose
probably the shortest ligns in the most tight ones to perform, and to paddle as fast a thy can, We spotted 3
main places, about upstream : 1 and about downstream : 2, and the athletes has to choose about spin or direct.
At the end of the day, it will be really a choice of strategy according to their skills and they will win...
00:02:03 00:03:17 C1 WOMEN 2nd Place 00:01:14
Straight into the action and it's the women, you wont have seen this in the Olympics it's a developpment
category , it's the canoe singles .
10 competitors have made it into the final and they will be going in the reverse order of their semi final times.
Lets have a look at the best of the lot, Mallory Franklin from the GBR team only 18 years old but she has been
around for years , she is on sparkling form. Last month she came 2nd in the junior world championships and at
the beginning of this season she was 3rd in Cardiff , lets see how she will do today.
Coming towards the bottom of the course , struggling a little bit , to get around the upstream gate. On this
course its 280 metres long, there are 22 gates to negotiate your way through, the idea get through them
without touching , the green and white gates are downstream and the 6 red and whites upstream .
Mallory putting in a very good performance, pushing her way to the line, and a very fine for Mallory Franklin.
The rules are, as long as your head and part of the body and boat get through the boat get through the gate
then there are no penalties.
00:03:17 00:04:50 C1 WOMEN 1st Place 00:01:33
Completely unstoppable this season , Caroling Loir from France , didn't compete in Cardiff, she won in Pau and
won in La Seu d'Urgell, the current European Champion and she is on sparkling form.
She cuts across the course and spins tightly around gate 7 , and sets herself up, really using the water, that's the
secret here, its not to fight the water , she spins her boat to get herself into a good position for the next gate,
She knows the lines to take as she will have walked the course and of course she has had a run in the semifianls.
Its all about setting herself up, she is going blind into the last upstream gate, taking a wide course , right across
the river to get herself into the main current , spins round backwards gate 20 to set up herself up for gate 21
and now its just a case of going clear through gate , 20 metres after that is the finish . and show your delight ,
the 3rd win of the season for Caroline Loir of France.
Confirmation of the results , the womens single canoes , France 1st , Great Britain 2nd and Germany with Lena
Stocklin in 3rd
00:04:50 00:05:06 ITV Caroline LOIR (FRA) - C1 WOMEN Gold Medalist 00:00:16
The race was very intense , the course was very challenging from the beginning to end. Its true that was at ease
doing what I was doing, and that was a very enjoyable feeling and despite the fact that each gate had its own
specific challenge
00:05:06 00:06:47 C1 MEN 3rd Place 00:01:41
After the womens we now move onto the mens canoeing ,same course same discipline, but expect a low more
power and a lot quicker times.
As you can see in the canoes the men are kneeling on 2 knees, using one paddle with one blade.
Expect the crowd to go crazy , it's a Czech on his home course, and Vetislav Geber is a local favourite. You can
immediately see the difference, the power they produce, the pressure they get on the blades to spin them
around the gates. Again using the power of the stream to push themselves forward , they need to keep the bow
clean, keep the boat on ,top of the water that's the fastest way down and use the stopper as much as possible
as opposed to fighting it. Coming blind around gate number 19, spinning the boat around , setting himself for
the 21 gate and now its just a case of power on , forget the lactic acid and it's the last 20 meters and over the
line, and the crowd appreciate that
As they are kneeling they can spin the boat around in incredible small spaces
00:06:47 00:08:11 C1 MEN 2nd Place 00:01:24
And now a true giant of the sport in every sence of the word, one of the most athletic paddlers out there, 29
year old Alexander Slafkovsky from the Slovak team . He didn't make it too the Olympics as there was Maichel
Martikan in there making it very difficult , so far he is leading the world cup this year, 3re in Cardiff , 3rd in Paua
dn 4th in La Seu
Just look at the control he has with the paddle , every stroke is deliberate, uses the stopper and spins around
the upstream, you wont seen much faster than that , again using the current, goes around forward , one of the
few to go forward through 20 , and now its throttle down and it's a fast as you can, over the line, Alexander
Slafkovsky who has been very consistant this year, finished in 2nd place.
Ballet on the water these, incredibly powerful well balanced athletes
00:08:11 00:09:50 C1 MEN 1st Place 00:01:39
Benjamin Savsek from Slovenia , an incredibly talanted paddler , when he is on top form no one can touch him.
Had a bit of a problem in the Olmypics a couple of weeks ago, he missed a gate so a 50 second penalty, also
turned the boat over and eventually finished in 8th place but did make it to the final.
He is absolutly flying down the course now, tightly spinning around the upstream gate , another tactical spin
accorss the stopper , tight around 17 sets himself up for the last upstream gate of the day, cuts across the
current , tactically spins around 20 , giving a wonderful demonstration of control and power.
Total delight after an excellent performance , there are 15 tonnes of water coming down this every second
Slovenia take the gold , Slovakia the silver with the Czech republic taking a bronze medal.
00:09:50 00:10:05 ITV Benjamin SAVSEK (SLO) - C1 MEN Gold Medalist 00:00:15
It was a really nice race, i did a clean run, that was very important to do it in finales... If I do one touch, it would
not be a gold medal, so I'm really happy whit waht I did.
00:10:05 00:11:25 K1 MEN 3rd Place 00:01:20
We now move from the canoes to the Kayaks. The boats are the same length , however the paddlers are sitting
down with a double bladed paddle
Lets have a look at the German in form paddler Fabian Doerfler , excellent results from the last couple of meets,
4th in Pau and 2nd in Lau Seu d'Urgell . He has a long standing pedegree, he came first , won the gold in the
2005 world championships.
As you can see this is a totally different game, they can be lots more agressive, its maybe more difficult to spin
the kayaks around the poles
Than the canoes as the centre of gravity is a bit further forward here.
Again using the current and setting himself up in a lovely position, all he has to do now is get throug gate
number 22 and paddle over the line and that is an excellent clear run for Fabian Doerfler
Remember its 2 seconds if you hit a gate, and its 50 seconds if you miss a gate alltogether normally enough to
put you out of the competition.
00:11:25 00:12:51 K1 MEN 2nd Place 00:01:26
Next to go is Mateusz Polaczyk, one of the famous Polaczyk brothers from Poland , he was of course in the
Olympic boat, 2nd fastest in the semifinal and a wonderful 4th position overall .
Where ever he goes , this very popular character always guaranteed good support, he has a very dynamic
paddling style , cuts across the stopper , they only have to get the head and part of the body around the gate,
you wont see any faster than that, he puts himself in a wonderful position , spins around tactically around gate
21 , paddle away and that was enough to take the silver medal
00:12:51 00:14:32 K1 MEN 1st Place 00:01:41
A true phenomonen of the sport 68 kgs of power, Etienne Daille of France , if you have been following the
season so far , you will know that he normally wins when he competes.
He won in Pau , won in La Seu and then came the Olympic Games, stage fright we suspect , only came 7th , but
at 22 years old that can only bee a learning experience. He always seems to know exactly where to put the boat
, he floats on top of the water
He maybe dosnt look the fastest but at the end of the day it's the chap who gets down the course with the least
amount of penalties and in the quickest time. Polite applause from the local crowd , when there is a Czech
paddler they go wild , anyone else and its polite applause.
He comes across the line and as usual 1.18 seconds faster than anyone else.
Etienne Daille who has won this years World Cup in the K1, confirmation of the result, France take the Gold ,
Poland the silver and Germany the bronze medal
00:14:32 00:14:45 ITV Etienne DAILLE (FRA) K1 MEN Gold Medallist 00:00:13
I believe it was one of my best runs of the year,I managed to go very fast even if I didn't feel that great, I am
very happy to go so fast in such a day
00:14:45 00:15:21 CLIP On Board cameras 00:00:36
00:15:21 00:16:44 K1 WOMEN 3rd Place 00:01:23
Same course same gate layout but this time it's the women who are going head to head in the Kayak induvidual
, not a familiar face yet , she is 23 years old, ranked number in Germany but Ricarda Funk is a very determined
young lady, she had a glittering junior career , this is only her 4th ever World Cup race, oh she hits gate number
13 will she regret that , she so far had the best split time by a countey mile , again slightly built but masses of
determination always knows how to put the boat in the right place.
The whistling in the background is the German team encouraging down their paddler. Ricarda Funk this has
been by far the best result of her life.
Hits gate 13 a 2 second penalty which is automatically added onto the time .
00:16:44 00:18:28 K1 WOMEN 2nd Place 00:01:44
Now lets have a look at the French paddler Carole Bouzidi, was very unlucky to miss out on the Olympic Games
place , but Emily Fer who took the place did win the Gold medal.
A very dynamic powerful stroke style , Carole is the current European champion takin the title in Augsburg in
Germany.
There is a lovely shot of all the gates in a row, as you can see it's a straight course built down the side of the
Vltava river
The course was built in 1983, and next year in 2013 it will be hosting the world Championships.
Back to the action, she cuts gently around gate number 17 sets herself up for the last upsteam of the course,
and here she is losing time this is costing her important fractions of a second, she will regret that at the end of
the day looking at the video. A good time but that mistake on Gate 20 will cost her the victory.
00:18:28 00:20:30 K1 WOMEN 1st Place 00:02:02
Now we are here for a demonstration of class. Jana Dukatova from the
2006 World Champion . Sometimes disconcerting to watch her as she makes it look all so easy, a combination of
style , positioning the paddle in the water and complete confidence.
Jana is flying down the course although she looks like she is almost not trying. Sets herself up nicely down the
2nd part of the course.
It all about looking sometimes 2-3 gates ahead getting themselves in the right position and safely wide around
gate 17, she certanly doesn't want to pick up any penalties at this stage, also a clear bearth around the last
upstream gate, a controlled spin and uses the flow of the water , gracefully paddles over the line and wins the
event by a massive 1.88 seconds , this is how to do it.
Confirmation of the result, Slovakia Gold , France Silver and Germany Bronze with a first medal for RIcarda
Funk.
00:20:30 00:20:53 ITV Jana DUKATOVA (SVK) - K1 WOMEN Gold Medalist 00:00:23
I think it was a quite good race as I did two clean race. The first one was a little bit slower, but in this semi
finales I juste wanted to be in the top ten to be qualified to the final.. So i leaded and in my finale I managed to
go 2 second faster.. So yes, I am really happy with my performance ...
00:20:53 00:22:39 C2 MEN 3rd Place 00:01:46
The excitement is building , the last event of the day is the canoe doubles .
Two men kneeling , one infront of the other , and lets have a look at some of the fittest guys on the ciruuit ,
from Slovenia , Luca Bociz and Saso Taljat In the first World Cup in the series in Cardiff , they missed the gold
medal by 2⁄100 th of a second, the gold medal was taken by By the Brits David Florence and Richard Hounslow
who also. won the silver medal
This seson they have been putting in some cracking performances, however they will regret the Olympics
games where they were knocked out in the semi final but they showing its all about power and control ,so far
no penalty points, the gates are not widened for the doubles , here they are spinning themselves around and
using the current to current to glide around gate number 20, duck over number 21, however they just picked
up 2 seconds of penalties that proved to be costly
00:22:39 00:24:00 C2 MEN 2nd Place 00:01:21
And now for the French Olympic boat, lets hope they have got over their disapointment of missing out on a
medal at the Olympics, they actually came 4th , with a few tears spilt, however in the Olympic trieals they had
dominated all the opposition, he is Gautier Klauss amd matthieu Peché
The French style ,lots of fast short strokes , it seems to work for them , in fact they have 3 boats in this final ,
they have just hit a gate , that's gong to cost them, however they are still are very fast, and that would be
enough to take 2nd place .
00:24:00 00:25:29 C2 MEN 1st Place 00:01:29
Here is a completely atypical pair but it does seem to work, they were both previously C1 paddelers , in fact
Nicolas Peschier in the back of the boat went to Athenes Olmypic Games. Nicolas one of the strongest paddlers
on the circuit, and Pierre Labarelle certanly the smallest, weighting less than 60 kgs but it certanly works this
combination, they won the European championships in La Seu in 2009 , this season in the World Cup they won
in Pau and they won in La Seu , and they have been winning in style so far, just the last gates to go through and
this is a cracking time and of course another win by more than 1 second .
This is what several hours a day for several years in the same boat does for you
Confirmaton of the result , France takes the Gold and the Silver medals with Slovenia taking the Bronze.
00:25:29 00:25:39 ITVP. LABARELLEN ⁄ N. PESCHIER (FRA) - C2 MEN Gold Medalist 00:00:10
The goal in canoe slalom is to go very fast without touching. Today we didn't go that fast but we had no
penalties
