| From a simple beginning in the 1960s,
the Sports News Exchange has expanded to an average of more than 6,000 sports-related
news items being exchanged per year.
The development of new technology means faster,
sometimes immediate, distribution of footage.
Eurovision Sports Exchange items range from short extracts
of sports events (approximately three minutes per item), to event side-stories
including interviews, profiles and backgrounders.
Almost two thirds of footage comes from the Exchange participants -- Europe's
public service broadcasters, select private stations, and third party licencees --
and the Exchanges also offer an important platform for federations and
sports organizers to gain European-wide media exposure for new or lesser-known events.
Eurovision Sports News also conducts negotiations on behalf of the
Exchange participants to ensure news access to major sports events, including
the Spanish football league and the Masters tennis series.
