Event highlights of the BG Triathlon World Cup series will be provided free of rights and free of
charge by the Eurovision World Feed service. The series features 14 exciting and dynamic races in 13 different countries around the world. With more than US$2.55 million and Olympic spots at stake, the world’s finest will be competing in the BG Triathlon World Cup series throughout the 2008 season.
The 2008 Triathlon season is sure to be a historic one as ITU celebrates a number of milestones including its 200th world cup event in Madrid on May 25, its 20th world championships in Vancouver from June 5-8, and its third appearance in the Olympic Games this summer in Beijing.
Reigning world champion Vanessa Fernandes of Portugal looks to continue her assault on triathlon history as she seeks her record-breaking 20th world cup title. With a dozen wins in the last two years alone, the precocious Portuguese star has been crowned the overall world cup series champion for 2006 and 2007. A win in 2008 will also make her the only triathlete to win at least one world cup in six consecutive years. The historic win could come early as she’s committed to racing the season opener in Mooloolaba, Australia on March 30. It will be a tall order for the rest of the women to stop the seemingly unstoppable Fernandes, but last year in Mooloolaba, her arch rival Emma Snowsill did just that, besting Fernandes for her only world cup win of 2007.
On the men’s side, Javier Gomez of Spain emerged from 2007 with one of the most successful seasons in ITU history. He won four world cup titles and made the podium in every race he started, an impressive streak that began in March 2006 and has stretched to 13 consecutive races. Gomez also begins his 2008 campaign in the season opener in Mooloolaba on March 31 with an eye to retain his world cup crown for a third straight year. He’ll face tough opposition in a deep men’s field that includes 2004 Olympic silver medalist Bevan Docherty of New Zealand, 2000 Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield of Canada, and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Brad Kahlefeldt who out-sprinted Gomez to win Mooloolaba last year.
