The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is launching a global petition drive enlisting people around the world to pressure governments into doing more to end hunger. The strongly worded petition gives voice to the indignation felt by ordinary people around the world at the fact that the number now living in chronic hunger is close to 1 billion, and that international hunger reduction goals appear unlikely to be met. It calls on politicians to make it their priority to solve the hunger problem. The petition will be presented to world leaders later this year at United Nations headquarters in New York. "The 1billionhungry project" is supported by NGOs, private companies, sports leagues and players, and celebrities from the arts, entertainment, sport and scientific communities -- many of whom will be represented at the launch. With "Match Day against Hunger" in October, the European Professional Football Leagues will dedicate all of its matches on one weekend to promoting the campaign. The following personalities are expected to attend the Launch: FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf, football champion: Patrick Vieira, former Olympic Gold Medallist: Carl Lewis, Fencing Olympic Gold Medallist: Valentina Vezzali, Chairperson of the European Professional Football League (EPFL): Sir David Richards, the presidents of the German, Spanish, Portuguese, Austrian and Italian League as well as former football players like Hansi Mueller and Fernando Cuoto.
